Invertiel – or jobs will go elsewhere…
Will Morrisons pull out if Invertiel plan is rejected?
A SUPERMARKET chain poised to bring hundreds of jobs to Kirkcaldy has said it will definitely pull out of the town if it is not given the go ahead for a new store at Invertiel
Around 350 jobs could be created by the £30 million scheme to build a Morrisons store at the former B&Q site — the first step in a plan by Invertiel Developments to regenerate the west end.
In a letter to councillors, one of Morrisons’ top executives said the grocery giant would not consider any other site in the town, including one offered in The Mercat’s expansion plans.

News Release

8th July 2010
MORRISONS CONFIRMED AS OCCUPIER FOR INVERTIEL DEVELOPMENT SITE

Morrisons has today announced that it has signed up with Invertiel Developments to provide a new 36,000 sq.ft sales area supermarket on the former B&Q site in Kirkcaldy, providing a significant boost to regeneration plans for the Invertiel and Linktown area.

Kirkcaldy residents are set to reap the benefits of having the multiple award winning Morrisons in town, improving choice and competition with the weekly food shop, if planning consent is granted by the local authority.  The proposed supermarket, together with a petrol station and associated car parking, will form the first phase of larger masterplan proposals for the comprehensive regeneration of the Invertiel area.  The development will also create approximately 330 much-needed new jobs, which will provide a welcome boost to an area that currently has over 2,400 people unemployed.

Speaking on behalf of Morrisons, development executive Andrew Wood said,
“We are committed to bringing our fresh food offering to Kirkcaldy and, having reviewed all potential opportunities, the Invertiel site is the only location we are considering.  We believe it is the best location for a new supermarket in the area, delivering the right size of store to serve the wider community of Invertiel, Linktown and Kirkcaldy.

“We know that Fife Council places a high level of priority on job creation and by working with the Council and other agencies, we aim to ensure that job opportunities created by the new store will have a specific focus on unemployed people in the local community. ”

Joe Noble, spokesperson for Invertiel Developments Ltd said,
“Morrisons has identified that the Invertiel site is the only location which is suitable for the facilities it needs to invest in Kirkcaldy and, most significantly, is deliverable.

“We have received over 100 letters of support for our proposals to date, many of which have come from long-term unemployed residents in the area who are really keen to hear more about job opportunities at the new store.”

The overall proposals will help to regenerate the redundant site, which currently presents something of an eyesore, returning it to productive economic use.  Together with the plans by Stagecoach for the new hovercraft terminal, the proposals will also assist in the creation of a transport hub and gateway for the town.

Morrisons and the developers are hopeful that Fife Council will consider their planning application soon.
